Aromatherapy is the targeted treatment of disturbances in mental states and illnesses with the help of essential oils. The term "aromatherapy" was coined in the 1920’s by the French chemist Rene Maurice Gattefosse. Aroma therapy is one component of phytotherapy and part of complementary medical methods. Essential oils are not pharmaceuticals in the narrow sense, but still can be used in a therapeutic way. Essential oils are freely available and can be used by everyone.
Scents have different ways of affecting the human organism. For once, they target the sense of smell. Sensory perceptions also affect other parts of the body and can trigger emotions, memories and body functions. One example of this is the aroma-massage. The combination of a massage with oils offers plenty of advantages and is the central method used by professional aroma therapies in the sector of alternative health care. Aroma therapy was mainly informed by the French pioneer Marguerite Maury who investigated the strengthening and healing effect of aromas, when applied to the body. This, however, affords a good knowledge of the anatomy of the body and massage techniques, as well as a familiarity with the characteristics of the essential oils used. After the inhalation of essential oils they also can have a more direct effect on the inner organs. Because of the high bonding capacity of scent molecules to fats they are also able to pass the blood brain barrier and can therefore also act on the central nervous system. Some essential oils contain verifiable antibiotic qualities and hence are well suited for the prevention and treatment of minor infections. Next to pure essential oils, also some specific medical herbs like thyme, sage and melissa can be used for this purpose. Often this form of treatment is used for common colds, whereby the targeted inhalation of the fumes can be used. The classic aroma therapy focuses on the harmonising of the psychic processes in order to achieve a relief from physical discomfort. Some therapeutic practices should only be used by a medical doctor, alternative practitioner, or aroma therapist.
